A D.C. United player tested positive for coronavirus, the team confirmed on Saturday.
The announcement of the diagnosis came a day after the team drew for its placement in MLS’ return-to-play event in Florida. According to the team, the positive result was received during a round of mandatory team testing.
“In response to the positive test, D.C. United medical staff have been working directly with local infectious disease specialists to treat the player, who is observing appropriate isolation protocols,” the team added in the statement. “Throughout individual player workouts and small group training sessions, D.C. United adhered to proper physical distancing and sanitization protocols, and no other players or staff have tested positive or presented symptoms.”
According to the Washington Post, the unidentified player had mild symptoms and was not hospitalized.
MLS is scheduled to kick off its return-to-play tournament on July 8. D.C. United will face Montreal, New England and Toronto in the group stage of the tournament. Since March, three MLS clubs- FC Dallas, NYCFC and the Philadelphia Union have also had positive tests within their organizations.
