2022 World Cup: Cameroon to meet Ivory Coast in qualifiers

Five African nations will qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

One of Cameroon and Ivory Coast will miss out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after the teams were drawn against each other in the second round of African qualifying.

Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions have represented Africa at a record seven World Cups, while Ivory Coast have made three appearances.

Two other groups feature two teams that have both played at football’s greatest global event in the past.

Ghana and South Africa clash in Group G along with Zimbabwe and Ethiopia, while Egypt and Angola meet in Group F alongside Gabon and Libya.

The draw for the second stage of Africa’s qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been held in Cairo.

The qualifiers were due to begin in March but the Confederation of African Football has moved the first round of group games to October.

Caf made the change after it decided to re-schedule the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations from a June kick-off to one in January.

Only the 10 group winners will progress to the final play-off round, where two-legged ties will decide Africa’s five World Cup representatives.

Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal and Nigeria qualified for the 2018 tournament in Russia, with all five failing to reach the Last 16.

The first round saw the continent’s 28 lowest ranked sides played in 14 ties over two legs, with the winners progressing to join 26 nations who were given byes into the second stage.

  • Group C: Nigeria, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Liberia
  • Group D: Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Malawi
  • Group E: Mali, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda
  • Group F: Egypt, Gabon, Libya, Angola
  • Group G: Ghana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia
  • Group H: Senegal, Congo, Namibia, Togo
  • Group I: Morocco, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Sudan
  • Group J: DR Congo, Benin, Madagascar, Tanzania
